RE: Longest Trip on Sporster.
A buddy of mine just made the trip from eastern Ohio to southeast AZ on a vanilla 05 883. The only mods were a sissy bar, snap-on windshield and forward controls.
I asked him if the 3.3 gallon tank was too small and he said it definately was.
His one bit of advice: keep Ye Olde 883 above 60 due to vibration.
Being under 30 years old doesn't hurt either.
He was frequently over 90 mph and his mileage was always over 45 mpg.
No carb farts. No weirdness. His bike just ran.
I met him 30 minutes after he got in to town and I bought my 883L the next day.

Last Fall a couple of us drove straight through to Denver. That was before I got the Sportster, so I was on my WideGlide, and it was 680 miles. It was a long ride, but wasn't all that bad, except for being a very boring ride through western Kansas, eastern Colorado. My 1200C is as comfortable as the FXDWG, so the ride would have been about the same if I had taken it.
Haven't had my Sportster all that long, so no "real long" trips yet. I did ride with a couple of guys down to Oklahoma City and then back up to Tulsa one day. That was a total of 435 miles, but we spent a couple of hours in Oklahoma City, so that was a nice little break. No problem at all, other than the fact it was sunny and in the mid 90's, so it was a little warm out.

took my 2 month old sporty from philly to myrtle beach. We got a little lost on way down, (WAY LOST), when my buddy new a "shortcut". Added about 100 miles to our trip. Speedo read 650 when we got there, we left three days later and it was about 550 on the way home. took 10 hours down but one guy had the peanut tank so we were always stopping,
