Has anyone messed with the SE race tuner for carbed bikes? part #32124-04

 

I considered buying one recently. All it really does is allow you to adjust the ignition timing. I talked to the performance specialist at a HD dealership and he said the only time it's really needed is when you do a high compression performance engine. These engines tend to run much hotter than a stock engine. In the summer, a high compression performance engine can run hot enough to cause a lean condition and detonation. In that case you want to be able to retard the ignition enough to stop the detonation.

The performance guy I talked to doesn't much care for the race tuner for carbed bikes. There's a hand-held module with six preset ignition maps that you can simply swap from one map to another without having to mess around with doing a lot of tuning. However, the race tuner does allow you the flexibility of tuning the ignition timing over the entire RPM range for optimum performance. Really a matter of personal preference. But, unless you already have a high compression, high performance engine neither system is really needed.
