Default Advantages/Disadvantages with Closed loop ECM

I have a PCIII installed, obviously with the O2 eliminators installed, the ECM is running in OPEN LOOP 100% of the time.

I also have a SERT (not currently being used... LONG STORY!!!) The SERT allows for CLOSED LOOP operation in the "cruising" range.

Question for any techies out there...

What are the advantages/disadvantages with the ECM running in closed loop operation? Is it just EPA/CARB requirements? Fuel economy?

Any comments/help would be appreciated.

There are no disadvantages to running the 02 sensors. Along with keeping the fuel at the desired AFR in cruise they aid in the open loop area with the learning abilities of the Adaptive Fuel Values.

So, what are the disadvantages in running open loop all of the time... (PCIII)?

O2s are great at filling the holes in your map caused by ware on the motor, changes in the fuel, less than perfect tuning to name a few.

So you could basically chalk up the SERT as a better method of tuning do to the ability to adjust to engine wear and tear, fuel quality, etc... because of it's ability to keep closed loop operation in tact and monitor/adjust the open loop portion of the map?

Yes that is correct and the new TTS MasterTune is even better than the SERT

The only problem I see with the TTS MasterTune is being able to find an experienced/reliable tuner! It's hard enough to find a reputable tuner that is proficient with the SERT or PCIII as it is. The other factor is for those of us who have already purchased a SERT.... and a PCIII... and have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on dyno tuning, is the willingness to spend even more money on yet another, better, newer, cooler, faster, more efficient, wiz bang to tune our bikes.

I know I can find just as many techs to support SERT as I can find techs who support PCIII. But it's us who have to spend the money and "TRUST" those who are tuning our $20,000 machines.

Well then you should be glad to know the older SERT will be able to be up graded to the Master Tune where it has a thrid program called the VTuner that will allow you your self to tune your own bike as you ride better that those you used in the past...hows that!

If you have already found a tuner that is good with the SERT, you're set. From everything I've read, the TTS tuner is the same interface as the SERT, just with more tables enabled. A SERT tuner shouldn't have any problems tuning with the TTS tuner.

The other factor is for those of us who have already purchased a SERT.... and a PCIII... and have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on dyno tuning, is the willingness to spend even more money on yet another, better, newer, cooler, faster, more efficient, wiz bang to tune our bikes.
If you already have a SERT that has been tuned, you don't need the TTS tuner.
