Default Overheating Issues

06 Bob no mods but slip-on's

Ug...I'm always having this issue no matter what the outside temp is. It's driving me nuts. Hot summer day I can expect it but low 60's? Usually it will get bad when I need fresh oil but now it's doing it with fresh oil and only 65 outside? What gives? This is happening all the time. I know I can install the oil cooler but what experiences is everyone else having? I use Mobile1 VTwin Full Syn.

Example: Rode to work in 30 deg weather jsut fine. Temps got to 60-65. Bike has been sitting out under the shade of a big tree while at work all day. Off work, start her up, get ready, leave and 5 min down the road the bike shuts off at about 50 mph and I feel the heat from the motor as if I'd been riding all day. While still cruising I just restart the bike and go. Sometimes I need to pull over and let her cool for a few.

Any ideas?

go to www.nightrider.com a great discussion on this heating issueis there, and info on IED's.
I installed the IED's and have proven temp operation drops 20 degrees, and richens your full mix.Unless you already have some kind of fuel mgmt, these are a good deal at about $70.00

First of all you stating that "Hot summer day I can expect it (to overheat)" is such a wrong statement. You shouldn't "expect" any motorcycle to overheat unless you have been literally revving the crap out of it, running at high RPM in Death valley at 125 degrees for hours on end....even then....WTF?

I need more info to help you out. By "overheating" do you mean you are experiencing shut down, or warning lights, or rough running at temp...maybe a combination of all 3? I have an 07 Dyna that I have idled in traffic in the Laconia bike week traffic parade for hours in 90 degree weather. I shut it down myself once or twice, but it never just "overheated."

I hate to state the obvious, but take the slip-ons off and try it. If that isn't your culprit, check your air filter/intake for an obstruction - the motor has to suckAND blow...sounds like you may only be blowing...and not much if ya ain't sucking! Is your oil circulating?

The worse news isif it isn't any of the "normal" causes of overheating, take it in to HD and don't accept it back until fixed - or trade it in. I know one person who had an '03 anniversary model RK. It always had overheating problems and HD ketp trying to say it was "normal for the bike..." I hate when they try to feed you that crap. he ended up Lemon-lawing the thing and getting a new bike. They never would/could fix it or admit it was a bad engine.

Hope this helps you in some manner.

It's not right. I run the crap outa my 06 FXDI, and have only had the heat management system kick in once.......... That was after sitting in stop/go traffic at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in 98 degree weather. The bike never actually overheated, though.

When running way too lean, I have had the pipes turn cherry red during a real hard run, but never over heated the engine.

Make HD fix it, I doubt the slipons are causing the problem, either.

Good luck,

DougJ

Awesome..lots of good info to check. I guess I should have checked the obvious stuff like the intake and so on so I'll see tonight. I agree that it should never happen. First it's still a newish bike with less than 6k on it and no mods but the slips. I'll swap those out and see what happens too. But city riding is well below joyful and almost not fun because of it. If nothing works out then it's off to the dealer.

Thanks for the responses!

I've also never checked to see if I have the updated injectors so I'll look at that too. I was also reading another post and the guy has the same issue as I do. Even at hwy speeds the bike shuts off but I've always thought it was overheating..maybe not and it's fuel injected related?

I am hoping you still have warranty left. If not you shouldn't have waited so long to get serious about this problem but if you do have warranty left take it back and make HD fix it. It is their problem. If they do not fix ittake it back until they do. 3 trys and i'd be on the phone with a lawyer filing a lemon law action. You DO NOT have to add anything to the bike to prevent overheating, that is not your problem, it's HD's problem to make it right.

The issues were not happening enough for me to get concerned so I didnt think much of it. After my first oil change it went away. Then only in extreme heat so I thought it had something to do with that. My mistake yes, not enough experience with the bike, sure but this is the first bike I've had issues like this and it doesnt happen all time.
