Whirring noise in 06 Dyna SG
Need help from some mech. savy guys, I have a Dyna SG 06, 7900 miles. I changed the primary fluid at 5200 (HD primary + trans) along with the tranny and crankcase. Mobil 1 V twin in the crank, and Mobil 1 gear in the tranny. Well it started making this whirring noise when the clutch is engaged and in 1st gear. The clunking noise seems louder too from neutral to 1st. It's not so bad but now it's loud enough to where you can hear it from 10 feet away when driving by. Took it to an indy shop and after three hours they couldn't figure it out. Told me to take it to the dealer and have them look at it. Well the dealer we have here is not exactly first class, but took it to them anyways. Guy at the sevice desk just looked at me and said they were too busy to take it in right then. As I was walking out and an older guy in the service shop said he was taking a break anyway and he will listen to it. So he listens and tells me that a Sportster just came in with the same problem. Passes me a card and tells me to call him on Weds. thats when they should have the sportster checked out by then. Anyone have this problem with their dyna's or any other bike? If so what was the outcome? Anyone have a clue to what could be wrong? The Indy shop said they called a couple of HDmechs and they couldn't tell them what was making the noise. I appreciate any feedback, and yes I know a HD is supposed to vibrate and make noise, but it didn't make this noise for the first 7000 plus miles. Thanks again for any help.

RE: Whirring noise in 06 Dyna SG
I am hearing a whirring type noise in neutral. Is this the noise you are talking about? I bought the bike at 2500 miles, I have put 4000 on it since. Never noticed the noise before, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I'm not sure. What did you find out from the dealer?

RE: Whirring noise in 06 Dyna SG
Called my dealer, they said they have had similar complaints about the bearing. Fortunately my warranty runs until March of "08. I asked if I keep having problems after my warranty runs out if Harley would pick up the tab, and she told me "it's possible, as a good will gesture. I didn't look at my manual yet, has anyone changed the bearing , how involved is it? Any "special" tools needed?

RE: Whirring noise in 06 Dyna SG
Howdy Folks,
Now for the bad news! The 06 Dyna (and probably all other later models) is a completely different beastie than the rest. Primary bearing is required to be replaced every 15K miles. At the time I bought mine (build date 03/08/06 and #160 built that Wed.), I was told the problem with the primary bearing had been resolved. Right, they just made changing the bearing part of the 15K mile service.
The noise sounds like a throw out bearing is going bad in a car. That would be in neutral and will go away when you pull the clutch lever in when it first shows up and will progressively get louder.
Well boys and girls, it ain't going to make it that fare. Symptoms will begin to show up around 7K miles that the bearing is history and if you let it go (like I did) hoping to make it to the 15K change point, you will also need to change the clutch hub bearing. I needed this done at 12,200 miles. My dealer did warranty it and two months ago, I was told that I wouldn't have any more problems with it. I just put on an additional 7K miles and the bearing is self destructing again. I'm going to have a chat with the service manager yet again. I need to check out a different fix for this "little" problem. I'm not sure of the international number of the primary bearing but I will write it down this time, It is a roller bearing and I do believe it is shielded. My guess is that the shielding is keeping an adequate supply of oil from reaching the rollers. I need to check this out at a good bearing shop but my guess is that it should be replaced with a double row sealed ball bearing (if it will fit) with the inner seal removed. That is a task to be done after the warrenty is up. Baker sells a bearing that is a heavy duty number for earlier engines but I'm not sure that it will fit in the newer design engine (internal oil lines). Stay tuned, I will apprise you of what I find out.
Anyone else been down this road with an 06 Dyna or 07 and up all big twins? Please speak up and let us know how you faired. BTW keep in mind that the design of the 06 Dyna is so different from other 06 models and earlier bikes that it should not be compared to them;
Sorry about the edits, my spelling sucks.

Vic
The whirring noise do sound like the throwout bearing was going out as in a car. While I was atanother dealer waiting to get the SG serviced, a sales man rolled a 08 Dyna Lowrider105 anniversary out the door to the parking lot. Bike had five miles on it, so I kinda looked at it and he told me so on it, so I did. I jokingly asked him if I could take it for a road test and he said let me see your license and insurance. Looked at it said take to the off ramp and bring it back (ten mile round trip) I did and short story Igot my whirring noise, speedo mount andgas dented tank issue fixed. I'm a proud owner of a "Duracell" Dyna Lowrider.with shorter shocks, Roush performance slip ons, chromed out highway and passengerpegs, security and tail/brake light kit $16,710 out the door .Which I thought was a good deal at least to me it was. Hope you get yourscoot working right.
