Interesting article and true, cagers walk away from an accident, most cyclist's don't.A large price to pay for some lane splitting.

Even though it's legal here in CA --I still will not do it! I'm never in that much of hurry, nor do I need to be at the front of the line so badly, that I will put myself in harms way.[sm=badidea.gif]

its not a bad idea for everyone. if you cant handle lanesplitting, then you are wise to not do it. as for harms way, sitting in traffic has its own hazards, like getting rear ended. i prefer to be a moving target.

this sums it up well enough for both cagers and non-splitting motorcycle folks:
"A lot of trapped, car-bound commuters resent the fact that motorcycles can zip by while they slug along at 10
mph, Harrison said. But he said those commuters should remember that the privilege comes with a significant risk."

yep. i dont get pissed at them for not gettin wet when it rains, they can just sit there like good sheeple when i pass by. as for cars moving at
10 mph, ive seen worse at the bridge backup.

ridin aint for everyone, and splitting is for a very select few riders. car drivers are neither so they just can sit back, tune the radio, drink
some coffee, and enjoy the gridlock.

we'll be on our way. i figure i turn an hour and half commute into a 20 minute commute when traffic is bad.

they can laugh at me riding in the rain, though. its a'ight though, i got places to be, yo.

Having just been in a lane sharing accident last week, I don't know that I'll be doing it again anytime soon. However, if I do choose to take the risk and lane share again, I know that I'll be much more causious (sp) then I was last time. When I do lane share I do it amuch lower rate of speed then a lot of other people that I have seen and am usually forced to pull into traffic to let faster bikes go by me.

Nope, it is illegal to split lanes here in California, Just not strictly enforced. Now lane sharing is legal, Theres a difference between the two, Splitting lanes is driving down the middle between cars in otherwords making your own lane. Lane sharing is when a cager moves over to share his lane with you. If your lane spliting and your in a accident beings a cager squeezes you out or just loose control you are at fault no matter what. Theres a fine line between the two.

i've split lanes several times and passed motor officers and never had a problem or been pulled over by the highway patrol. just read another post somewhere on this board that explained the difference from a patrol officers point of view and he said he just goes by the 10mph rule.(don't pass traffic any faster than 10mph than they are traveling)

Before I get flamed on here, I didn't read the artical but that CHP is full os CRAP! I'm a lane spliting fool believe me well couple months back I was cited for it, And when I went to court it was explained to me just like I said in my other post. I was let off that time ...... I still do it just keep a better eye out for CHP motors.

I lane split here in LA, but I'm not a banzai daredevil either. I'll let crotch rockets go by who are moving much faster than me. Generally the cages move a bit to give me room and i thank them for it.

Have i had close calls? yup, A trucker tried to move in on me cause he was a bit pissed at the bikes going by him. He tried to pretend he didn't see me and i just flipped him off as i strolled on by. ( there was no where for him to go but straight, but he was trying to close the door on anyone trying to pass him)

The other day an old fart was stuck in traffic and crawling along, and thought it was a good idea to take his pills while driving no handed. The bastard was holding a handfull of pills and not looking at the road!!! As he drifted into other lane I just about kicked his door and window in, luckily i missed (not the smartest thing in the world to do i know, but survival instinct kicked in, literally.)

by the same token, i sometimes just don't feel like doing it. Something just tells me to be patient. Such is life...
