Default Springer with rusted damper, real problem

Hi guys. I got a real problem that much I'm sure of. I bought a "restored" '54 Servi-car. After I had a chance to get it home and ride I found the Damper did not operate. So I got a new damper, looks easy to install. Took wheel off, fender, handle on the damper and the bolt that goes into the forks. Now the damper should slide out, down toward the ground. But it wont. I tried to drive a screw driver between the disk on the lower end. I did that and all the disk came off the bottom end of the damper. So now it looks to me that it could come out the top. I mean with the disk off the bottom I think I should be able to lift out the damper rod. No luck. I plan to replace all of it so I hit (beat) it with a three Lb. hammer. Nothing not up or down.
I've been soaking it with P.B. Blaster for six days.
Last night I took an air hammer to the lower end of the damper rod that is sticking about 11/2" out the bottom of the ridged fork. I did not move at all and I had a great hit on it with the air hammer and I hit it for a while.
Is there any way to get the ridged fork off without removing the damper. I think not so I guess I am going to have to take a saw to it. I was thinking at the bottom just below the bottom bearing.
Any advice. Please I wantta ride.
