Default Chopped Rear Fender - UPDATE 12/23/06

Had a nice long post detailing what I did, but it got ****ed up during uploading so here's the condensed version!!

In another post, I told how my rear fender cracked after I drilled holes in the fender to mount my turn signals.

Well, I decided to do some trimming to see what I could do.

I removed the tail light and used the hole as an end mark and trimmed the rear of the fender.

Then, in order to stop the cracks from going higher, I had to trim the fender to right under the struts.

I transitioned that to the front of the fender by following the indentation and rounded off the corners.

Left side

Right side

You can see a lot of tire from the rear and also from the sides because the material behind the shock is all gone. I have a 180 tire I'll put on and then see if i need to lower the rear to make it look good.

For a light, I have a Pro-one plate mount with built in light.

I have a friend that is going to paint it, but it probably won't be anytime soon. I'll post pics when it's done.

Sort of a long post, but I thought you guys would enjoy seeing a new bike getting the knife!

Thanks guys.

My plate is from Pro-one and I got it on Ebay brand new for about $40.00.

Here it is on JP Cyles site, but it's not labeled as a Pro-one brand.

For trimming I used my air grinder with a thin cut-off wheel...and a steady hand.

I tried using my high-speed grinder, but it was too bulky and I only had thisck discs for it.

Use a thin wheel for best cutting!

Great Job dude. Ive been thinking about chopping my fender for a few months now. I figured that i would also have to have a set of 11" shocks for looks, definitely have to get some pics when your finished. [sm=icon_rock.gif]

Doug, I think his fender cracked due to the holes drilled during the signal relocation and the subsequent vibrations from riding the bike.

Mascman, I think the fender looks great. Is there any chance of bolting it back up for a couple of photos to let some of us see what it looks like?

By the way, the turn signal relocation bar arrived in the mail yesterday. Thanks a whole lot. Another project for this winter, but it's going to be a few months till I'm out and about again anyway.

I will see about getting some pics before the fender goe for painting.

I actually didn't want the fender so short, but the hole from the tail light dictates that.

The cracks were on both sides of the holes that I drilled. I had the same size washers on both sides of the fenders along with rubber washers too.

Maybe if I had put a bigger washer on the back side it may not have cracked...should always use different sizes so the stress is distributed to different spots instead of concentrated.

looks dam good.looks like a deuce dyna fender now.cant wait to see it installed.love seeing peoples ideas.espically metal work.thats what i do for a living.but i see a problem you might run into with the mod you did with the fender.i see you cut underneath the rib of the body line on the fender, thats good keeps support.but you might want to add little more suport to it,espicailly if your going with the turn lights on the fender.i would add a 1/4 inch rod formed around the inner edge of the fender and tack weld it on before you get it painted.you wont even see it,when your done, then you will have all your support back in the fender.but you said you have the 180 rear tire on it so you might not be able to go to far up the inside of the fender with the rod.mock it up first,to see if you have enough room so you dont damage the tire.you might have to go with a thiner rod or even then strips of metal.i would hate to see you go threw all the trouble getting it done and painted, and see it start to bend in from road ware and tare.and damage your tire or even you.but looks dam good.now get it done and post some pics
