Deep Dive

Harley's brand-new Pan America adventure bike will officially launch at some point in 2021, and MoCo is obviously expecting it to generate some serious excitement in showrooms across the globe. As such, Harley has been showing off its Pan America prototype at European dealers recently in an attempt to gauge public reaction there. So as we anxiously await the new model's arrival, now is a great time to take a closer look at what makes it so special.

Design

The Pan America's design is rugged and off-roady in nature, with knobby Michelin tires, a sloping gas tank, a stepped-up seat, raised windshield, heated grips, and an upswept exhaust. Lighting is 100% LED, and the bike's TFT instrument panel is smartphone compatible. Spoked wheels and special graphics further enhance the Pan America's unique appearance.

Max Power

The Pan America is powered by Harley's brand new Revolution Max 1,250cc liquid-cooled V-twin producing 145 horsepower and 90 pound-feet of torque, which makes it competitive with bikes like BMW's R 1250 GS. That engine is expected to be backed up by a six-speed transmission when the Pan America hits showrooms.

Notable Goodies

Other notable goodies include model-specific Brembo brakes, a skid plate to protect the mechanicals off-road, luggage racks, and crash bars. A couple of interesting notes about the Pan America include the fact that it only has one turn signal switch and that it's a chain drive, not belt-driven.

Suspension

The suspension of the Pan America consists of inverted front forks with an adjustable mono-shock setup in the rear. The idea is to provide a balance of both on-road comfort for long hauls and off-road capability in one tidy package.

Big Departure

Clearly, the Pan America is a big departure for Harley-Davidson and what we've come to expect from its bikes, traditionally speaking. And as of now, no one has had the opportunity to ride one - prototype or not - so it's hard to say just how good it'll be.

Unanswered Questions

There are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the Pan America, including price, but most expect it to start out at a tad over $20k. For now, we'll have to reserve judgment for when Harley finally reveals the new model, but what we've seen so far seems quite promising.
