Neo Bike

Looking like an escapee from a Tron movie, 'The Spirit' is a radical build that combines futuristic elements with a retro feel. Conceived by Smoked Garage founder Nicko Eigert, the worked-over Softail won the 'Iconic Bike' feature for its 'Neo Futuristic Board Tracker' concept at the 2019 Suryanation Motorland in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Softail Spirit

Starting out as an Evolution-powered Softail, 'The Spirit' received a total makeover for Suryanation Motorland's biker build-off. Indonesian-based custom shops, Yasashii Garage, Lawless Garage, and Smoked Garage were all invited to submit entries in a bid for the Iconic Bike title. The challenge for competitors was to go from concept to inception in only three months.

Custom Feedback

Suryanation Motorland is one of the biggest custom shows in Southeast Asia. Part of the event's mandate is to inspire local builders while drawing international attention to the Indonesian custom bike scene. The directive issued to the Iconic Bike challengers was simple: impress and amaze the thousands of attendees. Smoked Garage futuristic creation did just that and more — according to social media feedback.

Novelty Hubs

While the Spirit's wheels might resemble the burners from a glass top range, they are a pretty neat design. The intense glowing hubs are the product of LED lighting wrapped around one-off 'hubless' axles. While hubless bikes have appeared in custom shows before, these lit versions are something of a novelty. The protruding wheel discs shroud a set of 26-inch rims clad in Shinko 777 rubber.

Curvy Cradle

Smoked Garage harvested the Evolution engine out of a donor Softail and fabricated pretty much everything else. The rigid Chromoly frame cradles the motor and provides mounting points for all the vital components. A handmade 2-into-1 exhaust system snakes around the engine and along the perimeter of the curvy frame. Enclosed on the finished bike, the girder front suspension uses a Fox mono-shock for damping.

Dragstrip Attitude

Kicking it 'ol skool,' a Kuryakyn Pro-R Hypercharger dangles off the motor's right side. A set of clip-on bars wrapped in Smoked Garage’s own handgrips adds to the dragstrip attitude. Brembo controls and hardware take care of rider input, and the foot controls are custom made in-house. Sandwiched between the top frame rails is a two-piece aluminum tank — hand-fashioned specifically for the project.

Base of Operations

Smoked Garage is a success story in the custom motorcycle world. Starting out in 2004 as a 'bengkel,' or roadside workshop, Nicko Eigert built the company into an award-winning brand. Smoked Garage has two bases of operation, one in Brisbane, Australia, and the other close to the city of Denpasar, Indonesia. Both warehouse locations include fabrication shops, design offices, retail areas, and coffee shops.

Cool Contraption

A great form of creative expression, 'show' bikes are a staple in the custom motorcycle scene. To Eigert's credit, he made his artistic creation somewhat rideable. He wryly stated, “It’s actually quite comfortable, considering the length of the bike and the weight.” Despite a possible chiropractic visit from its ergonomically awkward riding position, Smoked Garage's futuristic contraption is undeniably cool.
