Abstract DNA

In the best way possible, Harley-Davidson took a step backward with the 2022 RH975 Nightster. Launched with a moody, soul-searching persona, the bike is being pitched as an instrument of personal expression. While its introduction might be a touch abstract, the Nightster is a thoroughly modern iteration—one that manages to retain some old-school Sportster DNA.

Ultimate Canvas

CEO of Harley-Davidson, Jochen Zeitz, elaborated on the concept in a recent press release. He stated, “The Nightster is an instrument of expression and exploration, underpinned by performance. By building on the 65-year Sportster legacy, the Nightster provides a canvas for creativity and personalization, offering the ultimate platform for customization and expression for new and existing riders.”

Top Slot

Looks can be deceiving. It is only after some prolonged staring that the 2022 Nightster begins to reveal its secrets. The new machine sits on the traditional side of motorcycle design but comes replete with the latest engineering. As stablemates, the Nightster and the Sportster S now share the Motor Company's top slot for contemporary cruisers under the Sportster banner.

Past Attribute

The return to a twin shock platform is a bit surprising, doubly so, when considering Harley-Davidson's much-hyped all-Softail chassis switch in 2018. Yet, the familiar rear suspension is perhaps the single best attribute that connects the Nightster to its past XL cousins. A move that will no doubt soothe some of the criticism lobbed against the slightly too-new-looking Sportster S.

Focal Point

If there is one obvious detractor to the new Nightster's appeal, it is the exhaust. The insistence on oddly-fashioned and volumetric systems appears to be something of a Motor Company trend as of late. The lumpy two-into-one pipe is the focal point of online comments, although somewhat tempered when compared to the vehemence hurled at the oversized cans on the Sportster S.

Chassis Component

The Nightster's 975T Revolution Max powertrain is atonement for the exhaust. Positioned to replace the venerable 883 Evolution motor, the 975cc engine is the little brother to the potent 1250 version fitted to the Pan America. In a contemporary design approach, the 975T motor is also a structural component of the chassis, which serves to reduce weight and stiffen the chassis.

Practical Run

Living up to its description as a “canvas for creativity,” personalization is readily available through a rather healthy accessory catalog. Unfortunately, only a chrome cover is offered for the exhaust, which just accentuates the bulbous look. Among the more practical options is a 'weekend run' package that includes detachable saddlebags, luggage rack, pillion seat, taller handlebars, and windshield.

Rolled Out

Instrument of Expression, the accompanying launch video, features a discussion with the design team before the focus shifts to a bevy of known builders who all put their custom spin on the Nightster. The 2022 RH975 is ultimately the face of change, but it is one that can be rolled out to suit your own aesthetic preferences—at least some things stay the same at Harley-Davidson.
