Long Way Up

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have been friends for some time now, not to mention motorcycle enthusiasts. But it's been over a decade since the two embarked on a long-distance ride together, so what better way to celebrate a reunion than with a trip that spans 13,000 miles, 100 days, and 16 border crossings, and 13 countries? That's the premise behind the new Apple+ show Long Way Up, which premieres on September 18.

Going Electric

On their previous runs, depicted in the Long Way Round and Long Way Down, the duo used BMW adventure bikes to complete the trek. This time around, they're riding Harley-Davidson LiveWire motorcycles that are kitted out to transform them into adventure touring models suitable for long journeys.

Challenging Journey

So far, we haven't gotten much info on the bikes themselves, but we imagine that much more will be revealed during the show itself. It's an interesting premise and one that should present some challenges. After all, the trip kicks off in Argentina and continues through Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and up through Colombia, Central America and Mexico.

Cutting Edge Trip

Needless to say, the electric charging network in those areas probably leaves a little to be desired. But the point of the exercise is to prove that these sorts of trips can be enjoyed with the latest cutting-edge technology, and without creating much if any pollution along the way.

Doable Journey

Electric vehicles, in general, have made heaps of progress in recent years, but long-distance trips are still a pain given the lack of charging infrastructure and charging times. Trips like this require a bit of extra planning, but they are certainly doable. And it'll be interesting to see how McGregor and Boorman fare on their journey.

Plus Side

On the plus side, electric motorcycles have less moving parts than their more mechanical counterparts, which means that they don't require as much maintenance and theoretically have less breaking points. So in essence, they should be more reliable over the long haul.

Must See TV

Regardless, we'll be curious to see how this journey pans out in the end. We're sure that McGregor and Boorman will face at least a few challenges along the way, but that'll just make Long Way Up an even bigger "must watch" than it already was.
