Another One

Harley-Davidson is betting big on all-electric motorcycles, not terribly long after launching its first EV product, the LiveWire. That same model was recently spun off into its own brand, however, which will soon gain an additional offering - the S2 Del Mar, a fact that CEO Jochen Zeitz recently confirmed via an investor call.

New Underpinnings

The LiveWire Del Mar is set to be unveiled this quarter and will represent a lighter, less expensive model riding on the original bike's scalable, modular ARROW platform. The LiveWire team developed that same platform completely in-house, and it is designed to utilize the battery pack, motor, and related electronics as the primary chassis element to optimize costs, weight, and performance.

Familiar Cells

The Del Mar's lithium-ion battery pack utilizes 21700 cylindrical cells, which are commonly seen these days in vehicles produced by companies like Tesla. As for the structure itself, it incorporates the DC-DC converter, inverter, and onboard charger, which helps keep the size and weight down.

Middleweight Fighter

As for the direct-drive motor itself, that unit features proprietary magnets and scalable configurations for maximum flexibility and efficiency. The S2 platform that will be utilized by the Del Mar is LiveWire's middleweight version of the ARROW platform, though exterior styling remains a bit of a mystery.

Big Clue

Many expect the Del Mar to look like Harley's flat track-inspired concept that was revealed some time ago, which would make sense since the bike's name was inspired by a horse track in California that also so happens to host flat track racing events throughout the year.

Planting the Seed

During its call, Harley referred to the Del Mar as a "powerful, nimble electric motorcycle and the foundation for future variants," which makes sense, as the company is expected to continue to roll out new and more affordable electric motorcycles in the coming years as it aims to vastly expand that part of its business.

Coming Soon(ish)

It's unclear when, exactly, Harley will give us more information on the new Del Mar, but it does have another investor presentation scheduled for May, so that could be a good time to reveal the historic company's latest and greatest offering.
