Fantasy Rides

Back in 2016, Marvel Comics and Harley-Davidson teamed up to build a series of custom motorcycles to celebrate Captain America’s 75th Anniversary. Inspired by superhero characters, motorcycle dealers in Australia and New Zealand took on the custom build challenge. Once complete, the bikes were put to a popular vote. The lingering question is where are these bikes now? As fuel for fantasy, here are a few fan favorites.

Ferocious Panther

The overall winner was this 2016 Breakout built by Western Ranges Motorcycles. Dubbed 'Ferocious,' the build was inspired by the Black Panther character, otherwise known as T'Challa, king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Chris Whitten of Western Ranges Motorcycles says their creation is “completely blacked out, low and sleek, with an extra cool stance from the lowered air suspension.”

Spider-Like Agility

Selected customs were also put on display at the 2016 Oz Comic-Con in Sydney, Australia. A fan favorite and top-rated Marvel hero, Spiderman is represented by an Iron 883 named 'Agility.' The Sportster build is a collaboration between Australian dealers Phil's Garage Harley-Davidson and Canberra Harley-Davidson. 'Agility' is likely inspired by Spiderman’s youth and is fitted with a skid plate and off-road tires for that go-anywhere, 'wall-climbing' ability.

Bold Supersuit

McIver & Veitch, New Zealand's oldest motorcycle dealership teamed up with Adelaide Bike Works to produce 'Boldness' — an Iron Man-inspired V-Rod Muscle. Emulating the big personality of Tony Stark, an eccentric philanthropist whose alter ego is Iron Man, the V-Rod sports blacked-out components, a metallic red paint job, and gold-tinged stainless steel exhaust and wheels mimicking the character's super suit.

Banner Strength

Gamma-ray exposed Dr. Robert Bruce Banner as the Hulk gets his destructive character captured in 'Strength' — a Fat Boy Lo by Geelong Harley-Davidson in Victoria. The green, temper-riddled character's trademark torn blue jeans are part of the exhaust design, yet the forward-facing pipe would be enough to send the most mild-manner rider into a blind, Hulk-like rage — job well done.

Fiery Road Glide

Morgan & Wacker Brisbane Harley-Davidson took on Ghost Rider, a.k.a. Johnny Blaze, with their flame-licked Road Glide Special. A long-standing Marvel character, Ghost Rider's demon-bound flaming skull and hellfire emitting skeletal hands, aboard a mystically enchanted fiery motorcycle with burning wheels, not to mention his saga of devil-deals and ninja gangsters, are captured in this wild interpretation called 'Transformative.'

Solitary Defector

One of three female superheroes represented, Black Widow is portrayed with this café racer-esque Iron 883. A joint effort between Harley-Heaven Melbourne and Sy’s Harley-Davidson, the Sportster is the perfect stealth ride for the lethal assassin Natasha Romanov. As a former Russian spy, Romanov defects to the United States and becomes an agent of the fictional spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and a member of the superhero team the Avengers.

Mysterious Customs

There are many conflicting reports of what happened to the Marvel Superhero Customs. Some media outlets reported that the bikes were given away in a competition, but this was not the case. The official Harley-Davidson webpage that featured the builds is long gone. Like the mysterious and reclusive characters that inspired the builds, only time will tell if they make another appearance.
