Low Numbers

Making good on Harley-Davidson's new CEO's promise to inject exclusivity into the brand, the 2020 Softail FXDR Limited Edition rolls out in very low numbers. Announced in late May, only thirty examples will be available at dealerships in the U.K. and Ireland. The Limited Edition takes the FXDR to a whole new level.

Outside Company

From the headlight cowl to the tail section, the Limited Edition gets a stand-out color scheme of brilliant white, black and gold base, with a matte clear coat finish. While hand-painted and numbered paint sets are not uncommon in the Motor Company's repertoire, the Limited Edition takes a whole new approach. It features a factory-backed paint job done by an outside company.

Performance Attitude

The Limited Edition's styling was executed by Image Design Custom in Camberley, England. As the United Kingdom's leading custom paint house, they create custom looks for leading sports brands, athletes, and top motorcycle companies. In a press statement, they state, “The Limited Edition is a feast for the eyes with performance and attitude that’s off the leash...It'll blow away your senses.”

Local Touch

Released in late 2018, the FXDR is a fusion of dragstrip muscle and fighter jet sleek. Apart from looks and availability, there is no difference between the Limited Edition and a standard FXDR. The only change for the Limited Edition is a set of drag-style handlebars. In some ways, the Limited Edition is a spin on the CVO line but with pared-down offerings and a local touch.

Best Corner

Fitted with the 114 cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight, the FXDR boasts 119 foot-pounds of torque and a reported 80 horsepower. When it was first launched, Senior Editor Justin Dawes for Cycle World stated that the “FXDR 114 doesn’t look like it should be able to corner well, but it does.” In fact, the radical design has the best lean angles of all the new Softails.

European Owners

The FXDR met with a cool reception when it was first unveiled because of its styling and awkward ergonomics. While none of that has changed with the Limited Edition, the cool custom paint and low numbers are bound to attract a few more fans. The cost for European owners is £18,345, roughly $22,500 USD — just a touch more than the £17,995 MSRP for the standard FXDR.

Showroom Product

A production shift accompanied the appointment of Jochen Zeitz as Harley-Davidson's next CEO. In what has been coined 'shrinking its way to success,' limited offerings are meant to drive up brand desirability. As explained in a memo from Beth Truett, Harley-Davidson's Director of Product Sales, “Our strategy to limit motorcycle product in the showroom is purposefully designed to drive exclusivity.”

Special Machine

Harley-Davidson also announced that it would be switching its output focus to high-volume models for the remainder of 2020. In addition, custom orders will be unavailable, and some dealerships will not receive new stock until 2021. With the revamped production approach and recent health disruptions, the Limited Edition is truly a special machine. But, most importantly, it looks good and goes fast.
