Showcase Bagger

Flames and hot rods are a timeless combination. Built by Covington’s Customs located in Woodward, Oklahoma, the 2017 Harley-Davidson Road Glide was meant to showcase their latest offerings for Twin Cam engines, but it did not sit around the showroom for long. Here is a closer look at this flamed-up Big Wheel Bagger and its Evo-style engine makeover.

Shop Hang-Around

Fresh out of the paint booth, the sizzling Road Glide was scooped-up by a customer. Jerry Covington rightfully boasted in a 2018 Baggers magazine interview, “You’d think that once the paint cured the bike would have hung around the shop, but a customer saw it, wanted it, and bought it. When you’re an experienced shop at the top of its game, though, that’s what happens.”

Evo-Eight

It is a Panhead, it is an Evo, no it is a Milwaukee-Eight. Using some CNC-trickery, Covington’s crafted a dress-up kit for what some are calling the M8 'waffle-head,' making it resemble a mid-1980s Evolution mill. The 'Evo-Eight' also received a Stage One bump with a high-performance Covington’s air cleaner, exhaust, and a ThunderMax tuner to dial in the motor.

Hot Wheels

The Road Glide's twenty-six-inch front wheel gives it the right Big Wheel Bagger look and stance. A Performance Machine Supra wheel with a PM four-piston Megabrake caliper and a sixteen-inch rotor was installed in front. An aftermarket fender is tucked between a set of Covington’s chrome Fork Leg Bells and Axle Covers. Above them, Covington’s own mini-LED turn signals replaced the stock units.

Flake and Flames

It is hard to ignore the Road Glide's screaming inferno of a paint job. The red metal flake and candy was laid-down by Covington’s shop, but the firestorm needed an expert hand. Brian Loker of Loker Design in Owasso, Oklahoma, deftly applied the flames and pinstriping. Loker's work has been featured in “every major custom Harley-Davidson publication,” and he has been Covington's go-to painter for over a decade.

Beauty Treatment

Covington’s shiny rolling showcase did not stop with the motor. The foot controls and floorboards were also treated to a complement of polished billet-machined aluminum parts. Exemplifying good design cohesion, the grooved twenty-one-inch floorboards, linkage, and pegs match the rocker boxes, cam and derby covers. Exclusive, but obtainable, all the parts are available through Covington's website catalog and are all made in the USA.

Stretch and Tuck

The full-custom treatment continues on the business side of the Road Glide. To smooth out the Bagger's profile the stock gas tank was cut and stretched in-house. The dash was also stretched and fitted with a Covington’s aircraft-style billet gas cap and grooved ignition switch. Appearing stock, an aftermarket, ear drum-rupturing, 1,000-watt stereo system was tucked into the candy red metal-flake fairing.

Hot Creation

Since 1993, Covington’s Customs has been a leading name in aftermarket touring accessories and custom builds. This Road Glide is only one of many mild to wild creations to roll out of the Covington shop. Definitely, on the wild side, this Bagger is on fire — figuratively speaking of course. Now, who wants to crank up Burnin' For You by Blue Oyster Cult on that insane stereo?
