A Long Time Coming

For many Harley-Davidson owners of Touring and VSRC models (2008-2011), the issue of "mushy" breaks had been an issue for a long time. These particularly affected owners who rode their motorcycles on average less than 3000 miles per year although this was not always the case.

Out Of Pocket

For years, HD owners ended up paying out of pocket in order to flush the system, upgrade to steel-braided lines, and for the most part, took responsibility for the brake problems which would manifest suddenly by a complete lack of braking power while riding.

NHTSA Took Notice

After a number of complaints, over 40 accidents, and a number of injuries directly associated to the braking system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency took notice and opened an investigation in the summer of 2016. Although HD maintains that the recall voluntary many remained skeptical.

Owner Outrage

The national news release stating that HD would be recalling a quarter of a million motorcycles because of the very real threat of a complete system failure was a validation to many HD owners that, for years, dealt with the same issue. Many of these owners who relied on the local HD dealerships to correct brake problems ended up paying thousands of dollars in repairs and the recall only offered a "flush and fluid replacement". The company will not offer any sort of reimbursement for owners whose system failed in the past. The outrage was further punctuated by the company's statement that the issue is "likely" due to owners failure to observe recommended maintenance.

Damage Control

Declining sales and changes in the market have put HD on notice to listen and re-connect with its consumer base. Long gone seem the days when HD was mostly known for leaking engines and other issues, however, this recall seems to bring back some of that bad reputation that once plagued the motorcycle giant. A multitude of online forums, blogs, and social media outlets offers a clear picture of the current feelings (from actual owners) towards the company and it's not positive.

New Stock

The Company has quickly corrected the system (brake) issues with its current line up, however, there seems to be damage done to the core market (men between 30-50) that has not been addressed. The general consensus seems to be "what is the company doing to make it right, to those who regardless of the issues, remain loyal customers?"
