Happy Hunting

With the prices of pretty much everything - along with interest rates - soaring to new heights in recent times, finding good deals on just about anything isn't exactly an easy task, for the most part. However, as has long been the case, buying a used Harley-Davidson motorcycle can be an enticing way to score a great deal, given how quickly some of those models depreciate. Of course, there are many pitfalls one must avoid to find a solid used bike, but these five tips will go a long way in helping shoppers make an informed choice.

Frame

Among the many things one will want to take a look at on any used motorcycle - including basic things like tires and other signs of wear and tear - the frame can be one that many overlook. However, few components are more critical, plus, it's not exactly something that's easily replaceable, and a damaged unit can be downright dangerous to ride. Thus, shoppers should look out for things like rust, dents, or other types of damage to the frame, the latter of which could provide clues as to whether it's been in an accident - meaning that it might be best to avoid altogether, depending on the severity and circumstance.

Engine

The engine is a bit more of an obvious thing to check, but no less important. This includes not only inspecting fluids, but also checking for things like cracks in the case, leaks, and exhaust smoke, plus a choppy or rough idle. Of course, for those with a little more mechanical know-how, it's also a good idea to perform a compression test to get a better idea of what's going on inside the engine, too.

Brakes

Brakes are obviously an incredibly important component on any kind of vehicle, and motorcycles are no exception. Luckily, they're typically easy and relatively inexpensive to service, but when laying down money on a used bike, it's always good to know that ahead of time - and it can also help you negotiate a better price in many cases, too.

Maintenance History

Also common among all used vehicles of all kinds is the importance of maintenance history. While some owners don't bother to keep track of things like oil changes and the like, this can be a big red flag to potential buyers. Purchasing a motorcycle with an immaculate, extensive maintenance history is always going to be far more attractive than one without such paperwork, after all, as it gives you a pretty good indication that the previous owner took care of it and it's likely to last longer if that's the case.

Mileage Considerations

In the automotive world, we've reached a point where 100k miles - once considered to be a lot, or even close to the end of an engine's lifespan - isn't really alarming anymore. However, motorcycles are a bit different, and they tend to be ridden less than the average automobile. In that world, 50,000-60,000 miles is a lot, and though it doesn't necessarily make a used bike a no-go, proper maintenance on a motorcycle with that kind of mileage is even more important.
