Going Dark

Trikes are incredibly appealing to a lot of folks - chiefly, those that aren't physically able to ride a two-wheeler - yet strangely enough, Harley is the only motorcycle manufacturer currently making them. Celebrating its 120th birthday this year, Harley has rolled out a host of special models to mark that occasion, but personally, we're digging the brand new Freewheeler, which has quite literally gone dark for the 2023 model year.

Blacked-Out

The most obvious change to the Freewheeler is the addition of dark trim, which gives it a thoroughly modern look when compared to its chromed-out brethren. Harley has replaced shiny chrome with black trim for the front end, headlamp nacelle, tank console, hand and foot controls, powertrain, and exhaust.

Nice Rake

In addition to that trim, the Freewheeler also features a set of new Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels wearing exposed rear-wheel lug nuts, while the 18-inch rollers out back replace the outgoing 15-inch units to give the Freewheeler a nicely raked stance.

Mechanically Speaking

The Freewheeler is powered by Harley's Milwaukee-Eight 114, which cranks out 90 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque, which is put to the road via a hand-adjustable rear suspension and 49mm front forks. In terms of brakes, the trike gets 4-piston calipers up front with dual floating rotors, along with fixed rear rotors.

Cargo Space

Another appealing feature present on the 2023 Freewheeler is its cargo capacity, which comes in at two cubic feet via the rear "trunk." That piece is weatherproof, which will certainly come in handy for road trips or short jaunts in the rain, while its hefty 1,100 pound curb weight lends a solid, connected feel.

Other Features

Other notable features present on the 2023 Freewheeler include an electric reverse gear, mini-ape handlebars, custom bobtail rear fenders, dual mufflers with slash-down tips, and a bevy of safety tech including Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System and Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System.

Pricing

Though well-equipped, the 2023 Freewheeler is actually the cheapest trike Harley sells, with an MSRP of $29,999. For that price, customers get a Vivid Black paint job, while White Sand Pearl adds $750 to the cost, and Bright Billiard Blue-Billiard Gray tacks $1,500 onto the total. No matter how you slice it, the trike costs $1,500 more than it did in 2022, but there are enough new features here to justify that hike.
