1953 Harley-Davidson Servi-Car Is a Silky Black Utilitarian
Daily Slideshow: Harley's Servi-Car is a legendary ride that lasted decades in production. But you'd be hard pressed to find one nicer than this!
Deserved Retirement
Harley-Davidson's iconic Servi-Car was one of those things that seems a little silly in retrospect, but it turned out to be a massive hit. No one really knew just how genius adding a cargo area and dual rear wheels to a motorcycle could be at the time, obviously. And we're guessing that includes Harley themselves.
But while the Servi-Car enjoyed a long 41-year production cycle, few examples live up to the excellence that is this 1953 model offered in a recent Mecum auction.
Dark but Shiny
The silky black hog was treated to a show quality restoration that has left it absolutely flawless today. On top of that, there are loads of optional chrome bits that perfectly complement its dark color, including grab rails, bumper, muffler, box lift handle, and front brake.

Slow Start
By the time this particular Servi-Car was built, the model was well established and selling well. But in 1933, one year after it was introduced, Harley moved a mere 3,168 units. That slumping start can be blamed on the economic hardships of the time, however.

Multiple Advantages
Harley never gave up on the Servi-Car, however, making many improvements to it over the years. And customers quickly took note. This was an easy to ride a bike that was more fuel-efficient, smaller, and more economical than your average delivery/service vehicle.

Interestingly, police departments around the country found the Servi-Car to be a useful tool as well. Officers could fit the bike in small spaces where patrol cars just couldn't go. They also made for excellent ticket writing machines while patrolling large urban cities.

Serving Customers
It was that sort of versatility that endeared the Servi-Car to so many. Harley quickly moved to serve those markets as well, even offering options like full rear fenders for a mere $3.50 in 1932 that provided even more advertising space.

She's a Survivor
With a reverse gear and the capability of being towed behind any car, the Servi-Car also endeared itself to car dealerships. So it's no wonder that this bike eventually became one of Harley's longest-lasting models of all-time. And you'd be hard pressed to find a surviving example nicer than this one!
