This article applies to the Harley Sportster (2000-2015).

Side view mirrors are used to see behind you, but they also can be a cool custom visual element on the bike. There are several different options for you to choose from if or when you require replacements due to damage or personal taste. The good news is, replacing them is very easy to do and no special tools are necessary. Here is how to replace side view mirrors on your Harley Sportster.

Materials Needed

  • Allen key set
  • Replacement mirror
  • Threadlocker
  • Socket set

These steps may not reflect your bike entirety, as there are many slightly different mirror placements. However, the gist of the procedure is still the same.

Step 1 – Remove the turn signal

First things first, use an Allen key to remove the turn signal light from the handlebar. Once the bolt is off, the signal will fall right out. You don't have to take it off on every bike, but it makes it a lot easier to get to the mirror nut on most of them.

Step 2 – Remove the mounting nut

The mirror typically has a long threaded rod that goes through the mount, with a bolt on the bottom of it. Remove the mounting nut that is securing the mirror in place. Try not to drop it and lose it. Then remove the mirror from the handlebar.

Step 3 – Mount the new mirror

Slide the new mirror into the mounting hole on the handlebars, then hand-tighten it into place. While the mirror is secure, but not too tight, sit on the bike as you would when riding and adjust it to your liking. The factory nut is a Nylock type, but you can also apply some Threadlocker to help secure it in place so it doesn't move in the wind. If the new mirror does not use that type of nut, be sure to use thread lock.

Step 4 – Remount the turn signal

Once you have adjusted the mirror and tightened it down, reinstall the turn signal. Slip the turn signal stud back in place and tighten the set screw.

Then that's it, just repeat the steps for the other side.
