This article applies to the Harley Davidson Dyna Glide.

Key fobs are special remotes used in conjunction with a motorcycle's security system to start its engine. It is a useful accessory that is sometimes overlooked because the remotes since 2007 are passive, meaning you just need it in your pocket for the bike to disarm the system. However, when a fob malfunctions or breaks, the unit will need to be replaced and reprogrammed or the alarm system will have to be manually turned off. Since there are two different types of key fobs, the reprogramming procedure for each one varies. Use these instructions to reprogram a key fob on your Dyna Glide.

Materials Needed

  • Key fob
  • Ignition key

Step 1 – Recognize the key fob

There are two different types of key fobs available for your Harley. The standard button fobs require the alarm to be manually disarmed, while smart key fobs need to be within six feet of the bike as you start the engine.

Step 2 – Find the security system PIN

You can't use this method unless you have a working key fob already, because it only works when you are in proximity (recent fobs) or press the fob button. Once you know the PIN, you can use it to turn off the alarm system without a fob. This is why it is important to set your own PIN and reset the factory default (31313) as soon as you get your bike.

  • Turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on quickly.
  • For smart fobs, press the left blinker button three times, followed by the right blinker.
  • For standard fobs, press the left blinker three times, followed by the fob button twice.
  • The PIN will appear in the odometer.

Step 3 – Programming the button fob

For bikes made in 2007 and later with proximity smart fobs, only a dealership can properly flash the remotes, since it cannot be manually assigned from home. However, older button style remotes can be programmed by using the following instructions.

  • Turn the ignition key switch on-off-on-off-on.
  • Press the left turn signal button two times and let it flash.
  • Press the right signal switch once.
  • Press the left turn signal switch once, and let it flash twice.
  • Press and hold the button on the key fobs and wait for the motorcycle lights to flash.
  • Turn the ignition key to off.

Pro Tip

Unfortunately, smart fobs do require a Harley technician in order to be reprogrammed, but you can still save money by ordering the remotes elsewhere instead of paying for everything at the shop.
