Default IDS rear pulley

So much catching up to do, my first experience with this. Rear wheel coming out not much of a problem, but I knew keeping the pulley in place installing it was going to be problematic. ('07 FLHTCU) my MM and parts M only addressed the standard bolt on pulley. I used a couple of long tie wraps and secured it to the laced wheel. Not sure if this is the correct procedure, but it worked. What's the HD method for you guys that have '08 and later manuals? I understand IDS was standard '08 and on, retrofit earlier touring bikes.
