Default 04 spokes to 03 12 spoke mags wheel bearing question

I read some stuff on the axles bein diffrent sizes between 03 to 04, my question bein can i put bearings from an 04 into the wheel of an 03 to get my 1" axle to fit. By the way im workin on an 04 dyna super glide. A guy in town has some nice wheels for a good price id like to take off his hands if i can make them work.

Wheels from the two years you mention should both have ball race bearings, which are interchangeable, we should be able to fit 3/4", 1" or 25mm in them. So yes, if you fit the correct size bearings for your bike you should be fine. You may find you need a different length spacer, to go between the new bearings, as although those three all have the same OD, they are different in width. Harley sells bearing kits with spacer.

Right on, i wasnt sure because every other thread i could find close, was almost 50/50 back and forth on the subject so i wasnt able to get a straight answer. The harley dealer here said it wouldnt work, but if im understanding correctly, i take the bearing setup from the 04 and stick it in the 03 wheel, correct?

Yes, that should work. I have a softail wheel in my Glide, having swapped it from 3/4" to 1" bearings. Your current wheel will have the correct bearing spacer inside, although I suggest using new bearings when changing over. If the 'new' wheel has 3/4" bearings, you may have to bore the central hole in the wheel, to take a 1" spacer. You can only check that with the bearings removed. That is what I did to my softail wheel (to be truthful I got a local shop to do that!).

Ahhh ok, thats the machine work that i was apperently reading about, makes sence now. For 225 for both and the front tire, id say its not bad.

Thumbs up

While the Harley custom wheels can fit bikes with any of the three bearing sizes, it seems the stock wheels have central holes dependent on model range and original bearing size. An odd way of doing things, but that is just part of the challenge for those of us who prefer the economy of using someone else's cast-offs!
