How does encoder on ABS wheel bearing work?

Not sure what you mean by encoder, but if you mean the exciter ring and sensor that monitors wheel rpm and sends the info to the ABS ecu module then............
In simple terms the exciter is a wheel with high and low points like a cog, the sensor is a magnet that detects the peaks and troughs of the cog as it revolves and the ecu converts that into wheel rpm.
