Question How Do I Release My Mufflers

Hi Guys (Newbie Still Here)

Need new tires for my 1985 Electra Glide Classic.
So I figured I'd take the rear tire off myself ~

And GOD said, " YEAH RIGHT "

As you guys can see from the 3 attachments; I DON'T KNOW HOW TO
RELEASE the muffler from that connection that you see

Some Questions Guys:
1. Do I apply HEAT to one end and hopefully disconnect the muffer ?
2. Do I apply penertrating oil and then WHACK it with a plactic hammer ?
YOU TELL ME GUYS ~ I'M STUCK

Schooner, I can't say for sure as I have no experience on a "classic" Harley as yours, but viewing your pixs it looks to me that the header pipe and muffler just face up against each other with a gasket in between, and the one clamp keeps it all together. I would try using a putty knife and gently insert it into the gap between the pipe and muff to try and break the seal. Once started it should split apart pretty easily. Careful the muff doesn't fall suddenly to the floor. When reassembling scrape off all the old gasket material and replace with a new gasket, then clamp it all back together. Maybe if you post in the "classics" or "exhaust" forum you might get a better answer. Good luck!

lay over night and hit it again in the morning.

Any way THANKS 4 your impute.

WD-40 has always worked for me. Soak it real good. i have had them where they wouldn't budge and after some soaking they pull right off.

If you want to get it off use a real penetrating oil like pb blaster not wd- 40. That's made for drying electrical wires and stopping squeaks, just read the can. Get a strap wrench , and give it a few turns in each direction. There's no official way to get them off so if you have to unscrew them so be it. I put a dab of never seize on the ends so the next time they'll come off easy.,,

If you have a strap wrench wrap it around the muffler and twist.

O-Town D is correct. It is a "flared connection" and there is a copper gasket between the exhaust pie and the muffler. Some penetrating oil ( after 40 years of working on automotive and scooter problems I've found that one is just as good as the next ) and a lot vibration with a small hammer and your connection should come loose. Be careful not to go crazy with the hammer. If you damage the muffler I think that I have a pair that are in good shape. You can have them for the postage. Good Luck.

I just loosen the clamp on the cross over pipe that runs behind the engine to the other side and lift the muffler and exhaust out of the way.
