Default offset on front wheel on 2005 FXDWG

I've got a question about wheel offset on my '05 WG. I want to take the 21" front wheel out and run a 150/80x16 to match the rear. I picked up a flea market hub and wheel (same single flange hub as mine) for $100, put my brake disk on it and hung it in the front end. The spacers and the rotor looked OK but the offset is wrong. It looked off so I measured and looks like it's about 3/8" off to one side. I put it im my truing stand and the hub has to be 3" from the stand on the brake side and 21/2" from the stand on the other side to get the wheel centered. (side note: I have a truing stand, I just don't really know much about using it. A friend used to use it and do my wheels for free, sadly he passed away some time ago) The local HD dealer doesn't do wheels. The local Honda dealer put it in a stand and told me it was bent (that the brakeside was "dead nuts") It sure doesn't look bent when it spins, however. It looks like the offset is wrong and the truing isn't perfect. Do any of you guys know if the wheel on a WG is actually centered on the hub, or is ther actually an offset and the Honda guy is right. Thanks for any help you can give me. And sorry this is so long but I wanted to cover everything I could think of.

Cool

skip, I know just enough to be dangerous, but I noticed the topic of your thread and thought I would reply. Yesterday, I was in the shop area of my local HD shop, talking to a friend of mine who is a mech. He had a FXDWG up on the lift and I was standing at the front of the bike. When I looked at the front end I noticed the wheel didn't look centered. I grabbed a ratchet handle and, using my thumb nail, measured from the hub face to the inside of the lower fork leg on both sides. Sure enough, it was a good 3/8" off to the right of the bike. The wheels were H-D forged 5 spoke design. Apparently, they're all that way. It didn't look like there was room to mount a right front rotor if you wanted to. Hope this helps.

CageDodger,
Thanks for the reply. Mine is actually off the other way if I understand you. My hub (at the axle, not the hub face) is 1/2" farther from the stand on the brake side, with the rim centered. But my spoke 21" looks pretty well centered. It rides in the middle of the fender. So what it looks like to me is the wheel has to move 1/4" to the right on the hub. But you could be right, in which case I'll not be running the 16 as I don't think it will line up straight with the back wheel. Maybe I should hang it back in the front end and see if the rims line up straight to each other.
