I have a 2005 Dyna FXDX. Bought it used in 2007. Purchased from gentleman that was down sizing to Sportster. Bike is unmolested. No mods or customizations other than a few add-ons. Recently removed the front wheel (19" 13 spoke black/polished) and took to local H-D dealer for bearing change. No reason other than age and mileage. Was called and told there was a problem. The bearing on the left side was sticking out about an 1/8th" and there was 'play' in the axle sleeve between the bearings. Was advised not to ride it like that. NO S%$T!! I asked why was it like this? They told me they didn't know and charged me $125. I then took the wheel to a bike shop (not an H-D dealer) and he measured the depth of the cups where the bearings install to and found them to be different depths. He called it a defective wheel. Took it back the Harley dealership and showed them what I found out. They response was the same, "defective wheel - buy a new one". I asked to see the old bearings and sleeve but was told they been thrown out. Asked for # to H-D. Talked to nice lady that told me the same thing, "Defective wheel - buy a new one." The wheel obviously had two working bearings and proper sleeve when it was taken in. They just must have been two different widths. Have tried to find a 1" ID, 2.045 OD and .750 wide bearing to install but cannot. What's going on...and why this problem?? Is this a common thing? Was/is there a H-D solution to these wheels? Any help from anyone would be most appreciated!

 

The bearings in the front wheel are 52mm X 25mm X 1" I charge $12.90 each for them and have never charges to R&R the bearings. I guess I should. If the wheel is defective you may check by placing it on a table with a spacer on top and one on the bottom that are longer than the bearing seats. From seat to seat than measure the wheel axle bearing spacer then - 6/1000" (aligns the bearings in the races) as the wheel axle bearing space is 6/1000' longer than the seats.
