The Sportmax Touring D205 has all the attributes of a superb long-life yet high performance tyre:
Key benefits
State of the art directional tread pattern with excellent water clearing properties and optimum wear
Molecular Engineered Polymer (MEP) enables the use of stickier tread compounds to enhance dry and wet grip without reducing mileage
Dunlop Jointless Breaker rear construction reduces centrifugal growth, reducing stress in the tyre. Improving wear resistance even under high load conditions.
It's a soft rubber tire. A sport tire with high speed rating. It's what the dyna use for grip. It's not a hard tire.

HEY GUYS!!!! ......Before we get a war started here,I'm talking about a DUNLOP 200/55/R17tire that HD puts on the 07 softail custom / standard/nitetrain.That's all, just the 200/55/R17,nothing more,I really don't care if you get a million miles on your flh's tires or 2 billion on your dyna-low.Hey,Ok,I'm glad you do ,fine.
I JUST WANT DUNLOP TO FIX THIS POS 200/55/R frickin' 17 TIRE !!!!!!!!
I been using Dunlops for years and like them.Just this one SUCKS!!!!!!!

Got the same on my 06 Std. Dunlop is the only mfg that makes this size tire I believe. It was made for the 06 up 200mm 17"x6" Softails probably to HD specs. Soft for traction. I got 6500 on my first & could have gone another 2k but I was changing the wheel so I put on a new tire.

Wow something's wrong with that mileage Captain. I don't know what your riding style is or the roadway surfaces you typically ride on, but that's very poor mileage.
I've had really good luck with Dunlops and get good wear from them. That being said I'm a very conservative rider and 99% of my mileage is long distance freeway commuting in San Diego County. I average 75 mph most of the time.
By chance do you use the rear brake alot? Or do you do alot of engine braking? I once talked to a guy with and EGC who got much lower mileage with stock Dunlops and he happened to say he did alot of engine braking which got me to thinking this could contribute alot to rear tire wear along with heavy use of the rear brake that some riders like to do.
I got about 14k on my '05 EGC with Dunlops. Now I'm on an '09 RK and at 13K as I type this. This new/wider tire is apparently an excellent compound as I have lots of tread left and I"m guessing I'll go to 16k+ or more easily from what I can see now.
What model tire is that you list on your post? Is it the standard touring tire or no? It may be softer for some reason if not a standard tire.
PS: OK my bad I didn't read thru all the posts before typing the above... just the first page or so. Sounds like you've got a quasi-sport tire there and of course it's SOFT but gives great "performance", hence your low mileage. I know I've heard tires for crotch rockets only get about 3k sometimes!!! (that would kill me as I'd be in for new tires every 4 weeks!!)

talking about the 200/55/R17 on an FXSTC(07)I had a 97 fxstc that used to get 10-12000 miles per rear tire.

Yeah that sport-oriented tire is just not gonna give up the mileage like a normal touring tire will even if you do every thing right.
I know I'd be frantic if I bought that model bike and that's the only tire available for it and it gave 5k. With the mileage I log I'd be broke all the time keeping tires on it!
By chance can you go to a different wheel and enable yourself to use a different size tire that gives you better wear?

but I just sent a complaint to Dunlop about their lousy tires. There is no reason why with normal riding that we can't get over 5000 miles on a tire.Planned obsolescence, call it what you want,it sucks. There is no reason that I can think of that they can't use a harder compound in making these 200/55/r17 tires, then again ,I'm no engineer!!!
Perhaps if you feel the same way, you'll send them a blast or two.Dunlop website.com. It can't hurt to try. Rant over ,thanks.

That mileage was on some of the worst roads in America too! (New Orleans). Maybe your bike is all jacked up?
I don’t mean anything negative by this, but are you a heavy person? Excessive weight can have a drastic effect on tire wear. I weigh 235 lbs. and run around with full saddle bags allot too.
Do you check your tire pressure?
I would be mad with a 5000 mile worn out tire too, but I hate to tell ya I just traded in my 07 Fatty with 32000 miles on it, and I just put the fourth rear tire on it and the 2nd front is still pretty good.
You need to figure out what your doing wrong.
