Wheel bearing and race removal - how?
I had a thread going in the dyna forum yesterday. Trying here. I am getting a set of 07 FXD rims to send off for chroming. The chromer charges $25 per wheel to remove the bearings and another $25 per wheel to remove the bearing race. So, I assume, to avoid an extra $100 charge, I need to remove these things before sending them off. I see that there is a tool needed to safely remove the bearings from the wheels. But, I'm not familiar with what a "race" is or how to remove it. Is there another tool needed? Anyone?

Actually there are races...aren't there? As far as I know, all bearings have races. You have sealed bearings which are generally not meant to come out in pieces. Those bearings consists of a series of ***** riding between an inner race and an outer race with rubber seals on either side. A sealed bearing like the ones in your wheels are removed as a whole. The "old school" wheel bearings from days of old are (single row) angular contact bearings which come out in several pieces.

The bearings and races are all one on the new bikes with sealed bearings. You need a special bearing installer / remover to do the job, you also have to be sure the correct spacers ( look like a piece of pipe) are used. If you don't have this tool, then pay the $25, you will spend a couple hundred for the tool and it's not worth that for a one time job.
If you attempt it without it, you will be buying new bearings because you will damage them trying to install.
