Default Need Help! Tire Pressure Question

I've seen threads on tire pressure but still does not really answer the question...what is the recommended tire pressure?

Service manual says 30 front 40 rear for both Dunlop and Michelin. It also indicates 36 front 42 rear for other models of Sporsters.

I replaced my wheel to 21 X 2.15 and the front tire with Metzeler ME888 Marathon 90/90-21. Tried to find the info on the tire, but I must be blind or something cause I can't find it. Metzeler website said to refer to owners manual. I read on another thread saying front 36/40.

Any insight on recommended tire pressure? I had 20 psi so I inflated to 30/32 for now.

20 psi is too low. If mine gets that low it's very noticeable.

I run the Metz 880's and was told by Metzler to run front at 35 and rear at 40-42 (one up).

Thanks. Does the weight of bike make a difference in pressure?

Not the weight of the bike itself but Yes, if you're going to be riding two up or heavily loaded for a long trip (or camping) then you should add a couple of psi. Make sure to test the tire pressure when the tire is cold, not when you've just spent the day riding around on the bike. As the tire heats up the tire pressure will rise, then when it cools it drops down again. I always check mine on Monday mornings before I ride.

The weight of the bike + the weight of whatever you put on the bike (including you) is listed on the sidewall as 'load rating'. That would be the total weight that the tire is rated for. So, a Sportster would likely be able to carry more weight than a heavier bike on the same tire.

Thanks Deucedog. I just sent an inquiry to Metzeler to get their recommendation.

Imho, It's all about preference And riding style. on my fatboy I run 32/30 fr/rr. I like a larger tire patch on the road for braking purposes. My wife and I only equal 270lbs. If you like to run higher speeds than you should run higher pressures for stability.

thanks...I am running 32 front now so I guess I will leave it for now since braking surface is more of a priority for my style.

Metzeler just replied:
21" ME888 MH90-21 recommended min/max pressures 36-40psi.
21" ME880 90/90-21 min/max pressures 38-42 psi

hmmmm....seems I need to go up to at least 36 psi.

Thanks for all you input.
