Hi All -
New Member here - just outside of Boston.
Wanted to compliment all of the members for their postings. Great source of inforamtion.
I recently bought my 2nd harley - 2006 street glide. I updgraded(?) from a 2003 sportster 883. Liked the sportster since it was the first bike i had ridden in over 20 years when i got it. Great for back road cruising but I wanted a bigger bike for longer trips. Was close to buying an EG standard this summer. To get the eg std where I wanted it would have required adding the lowering kit, chrome package, lower seat. Was at a dealer in late July and saw the Street Glide. Fell hard in love, and when I saw one in stock , Black Cherry I moved as fast as i could. Have had the bike about 2 weeks.
My first impression leaving the dealer - Holy S&$t - this is a lot bigger than a sporster. About 2 miles later - yeah but it's reallllllly smooth.
Other than tinkering with windshields to cut down the brutal head buffeting from the undersized windshield, I havn't had a problem.
So why did I buy my first Harley at 39?
1) Learned to ride from one of my Hippie uncles in the late 70's on his honda cb 400. Mastered it before i had my auto license. Loved the freedom.
2) My folks found out. End of my motorcycling career.
3) I left Boston to go to college in Milwaukee at Marquette University. Campus is a few miles from the Juneau Ave factory. In the early 80's hd was almost going under from the AMF saga. As a busineess student, I saw the turn around happen. Pretty unbelievable story.
4) moved back home. started my career. Met my wife about a month after my sister - a year younger -than me was diagnosed with cancer in 1985 at age 22. Sister didn't make it, but I truly belive that God works in strange ways, and if it wasn't for meeting my wife of 17 years, I don't know if I would have made it thru those dark times. Have two great daughters now 14 and 8.
5) in the year before i turned 40,within the space of a month, my wife and i lost 2 goods friends from our high school days. both went suddenly, way too young. driving back from her frinds funeral she says " Boy this makes you really think. Is there anything you've been puttig off?" Hello! bought the sporty about 3 months later. Best therapy a man can buy. I don't ride nearly as much as I'd like with family committments. But 2-3 hours on a Sat or Sunday morning is all mine. And I love every minute of it.
I plan on having a bike for a long time.
Live one day at a time. And have as much fun as you can stand.
