1973 FX 1200 - possible bent frame
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">My name is Dustin, I have a 73 FX 1200 superglide. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">I currently have it totally disassembled - with the goal of rebuilding it. My 9 year old son is also involved. Trying to teach him the basics. Lots of fun !!<o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">I believe I have a bent frame - in the rear where the swing arm is mounted.<o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">It's not bad - no evidence of being hit. I'm thinking it just might be a design flaw. But, it is noticeable just by looking at it. <o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Any suggestions on determining if it's really bent.<o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">I can supply a picture if needed.<o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Also - what is the best way to check the frame for hairline cracks?<o></o></SPAN></P>
<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana">Thanks, Dustin<o></o></SPAN></P>

HEY DUDE, WERE YOU CHEWING UP SPROCKETS AND CHAINS BEFORE DISASSEMBLY? WHAT KIND OF SHAPE WERE YOUR SWINGARM BEARINGS AND RACES IN WHEN YOU PULLED IT OFF? SHOOT ME A PIC.

There are several different methods to check welds. The most economical are Mag Particle and Dye Penetrant. If you have no experience with either of these I recommend that you completely remove all paint from the area(s) in question by sand blasting or a wire wheel and take it to a good weld shop or machine shop. Most places will test the welds for you for next to nothing.</P>

I't was not chewing up chainsor sprockets, and the swing arm bearings and races were in good shape.</P>
I'll send you a pic - don't have any ready available right now.</P>

checking the 'swing-arm",one way is to trace out-line on a clean floor, turn it upside down and check that that both sides matches the out-line??
