Beginner with implements of destruction
What shakin folks?! I'm a new rider and recent purchaser if a 2007 Deuce with Mini-Apes and Blue Suede and Black for a finish. It is the nicest 'thing' that I have ever owned. I was leaning towards the matte and black color combos, but, after researching, reading, talking to riders and full out 'bikers' I was told that the bike would choose me. I went to the dealership with full intentions of going for full chrome and buying an new Green Flake 2013 Sportster 72 whose price had been dropped. I kept going back to my Deuce (as I had been for about 2 months) to check it out. When my Lovely Wife showed up to 'help' with the decision, I watched HER keep going to the Deuce, it was over. Done deal. She had 'the look'. We bought it on 3/21/14 and picked it up the next day. This is my 1st bike... ever. I wouldn't even let her follow me home because I was so nervous. I kept thinking "You know you just bought a Big Twin, right? There is 700lbs of bike under you! You are committed now!"
When I was growing up, Dad used to stop and look at bikes all the time, but, never bought one. I actually thought he was against motorcycles in general. When I took it to him to see (on my 1st ride ever other than home from the dealer), all he could say was "This isn't fair & I've ALWAYS wanted a Harley!" Who knew?
We proudly live in SE Tennessee and so far the bike has made me feel just as comfortable and confident on the mountain back roads (even gravel on day one!) as my trusty Jeep does!
I am a metal worker by trade and currently run 2 large mechanical presses. As long as they are pounding away, I can afford my bike.
From reading this forum and others, I understand that the Deuce is kind of an odd ball in terms of customizing. Hopefully, skilled hands, time, and my access to a machine shop should be able to solve most problems.
For now, it's just gonna be new (taller) bars, grips, and foot controls until we 'fit' each other better.
This winter...
Who knows. But, I will post pics and start threads just as soon as I figure out how to. For now, I'm just going to ride...
