Welcome from NH.

The good news is that a Harley won't get pissed at you and try to buck you off; the Harley should be much easier to manage.

A Harley doesn't get any smaller. LOL
The MSF coarse is usually taught on Honda 250 Shadows. After you pas the test, take your bike out a little at a time to get the feel of YOUR bike. It's bigger, heavier, and faster.
Take it slow, it'll come, don't rush it. And most importantly, Have fun.

Awesome!!
You made a good choice on the bike and joining the forum. Read lots, ask lots, and ride lots!

Excellent choice taking the course! MSF course is good. Myself, I highly recommend the Harley Rider's Edge course. They cost more, but tend to be able to spend more time with new riders and run you through more scenarios than MSF, supply the 492cc Buell Blast to learn on (much closer in size to your Sporty), and are often easier to get a seat in a reasonable time period. With any accredited course, call your insurance company and see if they offer discounts for having graduated the course. As far as starting with a smaller bike, I disagree completely. The sportster is a powerful bike pound-for-pound, but it is also a very manageable bike. Learn what the bike wants to do and let it do the work for you.

Also give forum member Motorlessons a shout and ask for a copy of his free booklet. He is a Colorado Motor Patrol Instructor and wrote the booklet for us normal folk.

cowgirl, would you recommend anyone climbing on a horse with no training and hitting the barrels? Please consider a course. Even riders with decades of seat time have been surprised at how much they can learn.

Unfortunately our local dealership does not offer the riders edge I am taking the course through the community college.

The closest riders edge is about 40 miles away and I don't think I can make the Thursday and Friday evening sessions after work.
