Ride as much as you can, get used to the ebb & flow and keep your eyes open. Keep your distance from cars (esp. soccer moms when they're on their cell phones) and have an "out". Seems most women drivers (cagers) have those damn things stuck to their head while not paying attention and yakking it up with their "bestie". Wish they'd just hang the F-up and get on with driving.... Congrats on the new ride!
