Get yourself set-up for a Beginner M/C Rider course...can take @ HD, or local LEO should have sched...best way to get the ball rolling.

Just turned 40 and I never rode in my life. I bought a 2012 fatboy. Do it, it's amazing to ride.

Do it, I did but after the rider course and a couple of years on a smaller bike. You may find a softail or dyna a bit more comfortable for longer rides. Friends I ride with find about 300-400 miles on a sportster is about their limit.
