Just turned 50, dying to get a Harley

I wouldn't buy a harley as a first bike. They're way too heavy and way too expensive for something you are more than likely going to lay down.
What you're going to want to do is this:
1) Take the state sponsored, or private, MSF safety course. If you don't do this, you're an idiot and shouldn't be on the road.
2) Find a cheap bike to learn on, something that is newer and runs fine. Something you're not going to want to have to buy parts for or work on
3) ride that sucker for a while
4) buy your harley and ride that sucker
5) buy your next bike
6) repeat step 4 or 5
7) profit.
