Greetings from a noob in New York
Hello!
This is my first post wanted to introduce myself. I'm a 50 year old f**t just getting back into riding. I'm average height and build, 5' 10" 175 lbs. Haven't been in the saddle since my teenage days riding my brother's CB750F around the neighborhood. I'm very excited to be taking my MSF course in 2 weeks.
I have to admit I experienced some anxiety last month when I went to my local HD dealership. Like a lot of new riders, I went in to the dealership with the idea of getting an 883 as my first bike. The size, weight and riding configuration remind me of the old Honda and seem familiar. So I was surprised when the salesman plopped me down on on a fully decked out Street Glide, and started to talk about the port where i could plug my ipod in! To be honest, I was overwhelmed, stressed and somewhat freaked out! That bike seemed so massive...
Since then I have done tons of homework. I have narrowed my choice down to the 883 iron and the Super Glide, which I think is a beautiful bike and the size and weight do not overwhelm me. I still like the feel of the mid mounted controls. As for the 883 iron, I think it a beautiful machine and I couldn't care less about the whole "girls bike" thing.
I was wondering what some of you guys, experienced or not, think about the whole first bike issue. I would appreciate input and hope some of you will be willing to share your own stories.
Thanks for listening!

Welcome from Westchester County, NY.. If your near me, I have a 1200c sporty Im probably selling soon.. If you want to check it out and see if a sporty is a fit for you..
However, my experience is there is no such thing as a beginers bike.. I bought my sporty in 05, had a 77 before that and I grew out of it in a minute. Between the two bikes you mentioned, Id say the superglide.

I'm about the same size as you and ride the FXDC. Fits me well and I love it. I left the mid controls in place and added highway pegs to have the option of moving my feet around when I feel like it. Where abouts in NY are you? I'm upstate near Schenectady. Oh yeah, Welcome!

Greetings/welcome from Eastern NE...sit down, log-in and enjoy the ride!!!
FWIW, agree w/the Iron 883...currently ride a FLHX, but working deal on 2012 Blue Pearl Iron. Got tired of trolling CraigsList & finding crap bikes, or people who think you carry $10,000 cash in your pocket (won't accept cashier's check). Good luck & hope you find a bike!
