Default Help with deciding on a first bike?

Hey Guys. First, let me tell you a bit about myself. By the time I will be able to buy a bike, I will be 17. I am about 120 pounds, and about 6 ft. ( I know, scrawny little kid on the motorcycle- I'm cool with that) I have been riding dirt bikes and motocross for a couple years now, so I have some experience with riding, albeit in a different setting.

My question is this. What kind of motorcycle do I get? While I am attracted to the looks and quality of something along the lines of the HD 883 Sportster or the Nightster, I love the thrill of something a little more sporty, similar to what I am used to. Riding a Ducati would be a dream come true. Obviously I am not ready for a true sport bike, but something in between sounds really nice. I am doing this because I love motorcycles, and would love to save on gas money.

What else? Oh. I like the manuverability of a sport, but the looks of bikes from the 40's. Black is my favorite color. I want something that either looks very bare bones and "authentic" (like the 883) or something that looks extremely aggressive (Yamaha R-1 or Ducati Superbike). I think ape-hangers look ridiculous. I can think of nothing that is less appealing than a touring bike. As I said, I am buying this partially to save on gas, so it will be a semi-regular method of travel.

I am not exactly looking for reccomendations on a specific bike, (although I will not object to that) but more of an idea of what class to be looking in.)
Any input is appreciated, but please don't be rude just to be rude.

Thanks!

If you're planning on commuting/riding in traffic on a regular basis--and don't plan on hotdogging--go with the 883. It will be reliable and suit you well and retain good trade-in value when you are ready for something bigger.

hey there
im a newbie too and im 6ft but i wouldnt buy an 883 as you could be too tall for it

personally i would buy a 1200 custom as they have forwards and a better longer leg room

all the best with your decision and just to let you know ive ridden r1's and all sorts of sports bike all my life and i would never ever sell my harley's for a rice burner of any kind
