NooB - First bike purchase help

THanks for the advice everyone, I really appreciate it. Although the poll and advice seems to be basically split 50/50, :0. But I think I've decided to try and find a sportster in the late 90's/early 2000's for a little bit cheaper and have some cash left over to buy good gear and to customize it a little. Plus, I'm thinking a sportster will be a better first bike for a smaller guy like me. I'd like to start to learn to maintain my bike myself, so I'm not scared of it being 10-15 years old, but it would probably be smarter to start off with something with less potential for having major issues that will be over my head.

Nothing wrong with Sportsters. BUT...like me, seems that a lot of fellas get one, then want to move up to a bigger bike real soon. This relates to cash flow problems. If I were you, I'd think about looking for a Dyna or Softtail with an EVO engine...that hasn't been beat up. With your $6,000 budget there are some out there. I liked my 883. I LOVE my FXDS. Good luck....welcome aboard.

I think I'd eventually move up to a bigger bike, but like I said, this is my first bike, first time I will be riding a lot, and I am still learning a lot. I'm thinking a 900 or 1200 cc will satisfy me for the time being. I'm not too concerned about being able to go 95mph or on 1,000 road trips yet. Moving up to a bigger bike in a couple years, after saving up some more cash and putting some miles into my experience level, will probably be something I want to do tho. THats why I want to find a bike that has depreciated a good amount already, and will not drop in price significantly within the next couple years.

I have to agree with the thought of getting a used sporty. You can find one that's not too old and will be fairly trouble free except for basic maintenance. Get the manual for whatever bike you buy. I love my sporty and it's fun to ride. Lots of people in here cut their teeth on a sporty before moving on to a bigger bike. Enjoy whatever you get and ride the **** out of it. Welcome to the forum.
