I did the same thing a few months ago. On weekends, I'd wake up early (good weather and little to no traffic) and putt around on my own. First a few urban destinations (a few parks and several HD dealerships) and recently a few highway trips.
I rode back and forth to work also. I only have a 4 - 5 mile commute, but the "scenic" route is closer to 10 miles. (The 'learning curve' for commuting traffic is a little steeper.)
Don't think that you have to rush into anything - if you are not comfortable don't push it. It will come.
And most of all ENJOY !!!
