The rental ended up being $75 for 24hrs with the military discount. I did end up falling in love with it though. The wife saw how happy I was after riding just one day that she OK'd me getting one. I'm going to save up about $7K or so to put down on it so it's not such a hit to the budget. The first thing I'm going to do to it once I get one is put in a more comfortable seat. The stocker was a little stiff for my liking for long trips. I rode about 300 miles in one day and my rear end wasn't too happy that night.
