Also, would a Sportster Custom 1200 be a good starter bike?

Well, a little ground has been made. At first she was not receptive of me even taking the riders course. She figured what's the point if I'm not buying a bike. Good point, but I at least wanted to experience riding a bike (I just turned 40 and have yet to ride a motorcycle) and make an educated decision as to whether this is for me or not. If so, I want it to be an HD. She has now at least accepted the fact that I'm going to learn to ride. This is what I get for marrying a nurse. She has seen the worst of the worst and to her that is the norm, not the exception. This is the mountain that I'm having to climb. Baby steps.

Two schools of thought on convincing your wife.
Alternative 1- Roses, romantic getaways, and other gifts, followed by frank and honest discussions, and followed by incessant whining.
Alternative 2 - Sometimes seeking forgiveness is better than seeking permission.
From what I've been told, either will work.

Welcome from PA....
As far as the bike goes..include her ! As I am sure you will want her to go with you on some rides. Make her part of the buying and riding experience. That is exactly what my wife and I did.
