What's the MPG on 883c sporster
HI to everybody am Joey from Los Angeles well let me start am new on the motorcycle world I just started last December 2010 and after some research I bought a used 2003 883c Sporster with 9,375 Miles pretty much stock just different pipes doubles but connected .
Well after 2-3 months of riding my bike I notice that it backfires a lot specially on cold weather 40-50deg and the gas mileage I believe that its slow, I have 2.5+.8(reserve) = 3.3 tank well I only get about 75 miles for the 2.5 gallons about 30 MPG.
Please can somebody tell me if this is normal don’t I suppose get about 40-45 MPG?
Is the backfiring is messing with the MPG?
I know that I should take it to shop but I would like to hear from u guys so when I do take it to the shop I going to have some ideas about what they might be talking about.
Thank you …

You should be getting around 40-50, more or less, depending on how you ride. Backfiring is an indication that something is wrong, maybe a vacuum leak or just too lean a fuel mixture.
When you calculate fuel mileage are you using the actual miles covered divided by the actual gallons you put in? Tank size doesn't matter, only the actual gallons you put in.

Welcome Joey & you should definitely be getting better than 30mpg w/the 883 Sporty. Backfiring isn't good either so I wonder if your carb's gummed a bit, or there's something else causing the bike to run rich. Can check the plugs to see if they're indicating rich fuel mix (black/sooted). Best to get it in for a good tune - JMO. Ride safe!

Could be the previous owner just threw some slip ons, a K&N filter and didn't rejet your carb and that's causing the backfire or, as other's have said, something is gummed up in the carb. That's one of those problems where you start troubleshooting the easy solutions first (clean the carb, check the jets) and move on to the harder to detect stuff after you've ruled those out.
