Default Finally took the plunge

I have wanted to get an HD for 20+ years... Finally grew a pair and got an FLHX this fall. Unfortunately we seem to be in the midst of a VERY nasty winter up here in MA, so I likely won't get to ride again until late spring. I am itching to do some short and long tours. One question off the bat---what do most folks think is the most amount of riding that should be done in a day? Especially for a beginner? I ask because I have a friend who is building a cabin up on the ME/Canada border---at least 8+ hours one way...

Also---I am thinking about adding a Tour Pack to my FLHX. Opinions on color matching vs leather/vinyl? (I am leaning to leather/vinyl for distinctive look).

Warm weather jacket---I am looking at the kevlar jackets from motoport. Recommendations? Alternatives?

Lastly---GPS. Worth it? The Garmin ones seem pretty darn pricey---should I just use my phone?

See you on the road!

8 hours is easily doable, just be sure to drink fluids! You'll be stopping every couple hours for gas anyway. I have worn a Tourmaster Intake all day cross country at over 90 degrees. It is a textile with a fairly open fabric. A regular car Garmin is a lot cheaper. Just stick it in your bag and stop when you get lost!
