new from conn/coral gables fla.
have many miles in ducati/beemers /and recently moto guzzi.
while in vermont last week my guzzi started to act up,again,
.i have been stranded on this bike 3 or 4 times before and even thou i just love the bike and its handling in all roads ,this new hick- up at 7 am on my way to a ride with friends up in vermont got me nervous . i do not enjoy 10 hour waits by the side of the road and worst,no dealers nearby,
so, as we rode by a harley dealership i stopped in to look .
i was given a ride on a street glide 07 ,and to make the story short,
after another test ride the next day ,in back roads ,at high speeds with a goldwing and beemer following ,i decided that this bike is for me.
so, i went back in ,took out my amex , gave my guzzi ,practically for nothing ,and 2 hours later i was headed home in a new harley street glide in blue demin.
i have had it now for 10 days and next week i am returning to vermont from connecticut ,a 300 mile ride to get the 1,000 mile service and add a few items like an air horn and heated grips for my december trip to coral gables ,florida .via the mountain roads and deal,s gap.
also adding my bmw plug for my electrical clothing .
great bike.
i got it because of the amount of dealers all around .
my major dislike is that digital key. i know it is going to fail and leave me stranded someday.
keep fingers crossed.
and the lack of ground clearance .28 / 32 degrees is jsut not enough, but ,i can live with it .
as additional background ,
my first bike ,when i was 12 years old ,in havana ,cuba ,was a 1947 or 48 ,two cycle harley ,single cylinder 125 cc with two rubber bands for suspension up front .a great bika made by harley in germany ,they got the company under the war reparation act.
and, i am a frequent flyer to europe where i ride bikes with friends , . a month ago i completed a 5 week trip with friends where i led thru all the major swiis ,austrian passes and the pyrennes.started in germany and went to spain then italy andthe dolomites ,back to germany ,then the swiss passes again and germany and home.
stayed with friends all the time .
met many harley riders there but ,they could not keep up with us in the passes or the autobahn ,which is fine because i consider the harley a bike for smelling the roses .......not for flat out riding
and this is one of the reasons that i got it .to slow down and take my time.
other bikes i own are a 1982 bmw r100rs and the now departed moto guzzi tenni 2002, and honda 900.1980
so far i just love the harley.
when i get on it i feel like i am riding a vespa scooter ,a great feeling .
and have managed to get a warnning from a friendly police woman in mass.on day 2 .
my fault ,i was not paying attention.
took the street glide on some back roads and did scrape the footpegs more than a dozen times . i am slowly learnning to measure the lean angles .
and took it on a hi speed run reaching 100 mph with much comfort except for major helmet turbulance.
my guzzi at 125 feels like 55 . the street glide at 85 feels like 85.....not a bad thing to keep my license .
well, that is about it .
