Thumbs up Air filter element ( 2008 model: 1200 XL Custom)

Hello all, I am both a new member as well as a new Harley owner and was just wondering why the owners' manual states that the stock air filter element is washable but it appears to be a paper media that requires replacement. I have not upgraded my air cleaner nor gotten a power commander; although I have replaced the stock mufflers with Vance and Hines HS Straight Shot mufflers. These sound as if I had put complete new header drag pipes on without the cost ( the muflers were only $250 dollars and I installed them myself)! I am happy with my choice but my filter is dirty and would like to now run the bike so as to make the decision of whether to upgrade to a stage 1 as well as the air cleaner switch. Thanks to anyone whom responds to this detailed message.

Welcome to the forum from NE Oregon. Go with a HiFlo Air Cleaner like K&N...combined with the pipes, you will need a tune in order to avoid running too lean!! Most refer to this as the 'Stage I Kit' (Muffler, AirCleaner, and tune). Have Fun!!

Welcome aboard from New York. You can just clean the filter for now and ride until you upgrade if you desire down the road.

The org filter is washable,,, but only a couple times ?.. I replaced mine with a real K&N life time washable one when it was time for a new one. its about $15 more than the HD one and U shouldn't have to ever replace it. just wash and recharge it...
