Thanks everyone for all the great advice. I just got back from the dealer and test drove the Sportster 883 Iron, a Sportster 1200, and Dyna Street Bob. I had a great time on all three, but I think I'm going to go with the Iron. The Dyna was probably easier to ride, but I don't know if I can justify the extra $5000 on my first bike. I rode Iron for almost 45 minutes and didn't want to take it back to the dealership. My only complaint is that the rear view mirrors are very low. No matter which way I turned them, all I saw was my arms in the mirrors. Might have to change the mirror stems. I'm am going to take everyone's advice and take a safely course because it's been so long since I've riden, but I think I'm going to make the plunge and buy the Iron!

this is one of my pet peaves with Harley
I always thought they should make something at least a little smaller and more beginner friendly
In the long run it would seem they would end up with more customers

also if you feel comfortable and confident on an Iron I say you should buy it
and taking an msf course if very good advice that others already gave you

anyway good luck and welcome to the forum

If U read in here long,, lots of first time HD owners that buy sporties trades within months to go full size HD's.

The 1200 is fast but still its a smaller size bike,,, its up to U..

Welcome to the Forum and safe riding.

The sportster is a good entry level but usually guys move up to a big twin soon after the buy.

Thanks everyone for your insight and advice. It was a tough decision, but in the end I decided to go with the Sportster. I picked up my 2010 Sportster 883 Iron on Saturday. I couldn't sleep the night before. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning to come! Anyway, I put about 100 miles on the bike so far and I love every minute. Thanks again......
