My first Harley was a used Dyna Superglide that had forward controls on it. I looked for a deal on Mid-controls and by the time I found some I had been riding the bike long enough that I got used to the forwards and re-sold the Mids that I bought. Give it time, you might like it.

As to the mid controls, check ebay there's likely a few sets on there from people that swapped to forwards.
I like mids on Sportys and Dynas, they don't have the same "lay-back" cruiser feel as the others.
Find what you like and go with it.
